What does facial mesotherapy involve?

Facial mesotherapy is a method of administering active substances directly into the dermis using very fine needles. The mesotherapy cocktail may contain hyaluronic acid, vitamins including B-group and vitamin C, amino acids, minerals and peptides. The doctor selects the composition according to the individual needs of the patient’s skin.

Because the substances are administered intradermally, they act directly where they are needed. They may hydrate the skin, support collagen production and improve its overall condition. The procedure usually covers the face and, when indicated, the neck or décolletage.

Possible adverse effects

The most common reactions after mesotherapy are redness, mild swelling and bruising at the injection sites, which usually resolve within 2–5 days. Less commonly, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, especially in skin prone to pigmentation, local infection or an allergic reaction to cocktail ingredients may occur. The doctor discusses the full profile of possible adverse effects during the eligibility consultation.

Who may consider facial mesotherapy?

The procedure may be considered by people who:

  • want to improve the hydration, elasticity and tone of facial skin,
  • notice early signs of ageing, such as loss of radiance, fine lines or dull complexion,
  • are looking for a complementary procedure to other aesthetic treatments, such as botulinum toxin or HA fillers,
  • are in good general health and have no contraindications to the procedure.

The doctor assesses the indications and selects the cocktail composition individually during the consultation.

How is the procedure performed?

1. Eligibility consultation

The doctor takes a medical history, assesses the condition and needs of the skin, discusses expectations, explains the course of the procedure and possible adverse effects, and selects the cocktail composition. The procedure may be performed on the same day.

2. Local anaesthesia

An anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin and left for 20–30 minutes to reduce discomfort during injection.

3. Cocktail administration

The doctor administers the mesotherapy cocktail intradermally at multiple points throughout the planned treatment area. The procedure usually takes approximately 30–45 minutes.

4. Aftercare recommendations

The doctor explains what to avoid during the first few days and which symptoms should prompt contact with the clinic.

Results and duration

Initial improvement in skin hydration and radiance may become noticeable a few days after the procedure. A fuller result usually develops after a series of treatments, commonly 4–6 sessions at intervals of 2–4 weeks. Maintenance sessions may then be performed every few months depending on the individual needs of the skin. The duration and intensity of results vary between patients.

Contraindications

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  • confirmed allergy to ingredients of the mesotherapy cocktail, including hyaluronic acid or lidocaine,
  • active infection or inflammation of the skin in the treatment area,
  • blood-clotting disorders or the use of potent anticoagulant medication,
  • certain systemic diseases — assessed individually by the doctor.

A full contraindication assessment is performed during the medical consultation.

Recovery

Mild redness, swelling or bruising at the injection sites may occur after the procedure and usually resolve within 2–5 days. During the first few days, patients are advised to:

  • avoid strenuous physical activity for 24–48 hours,
  • avoid saunas, hot baths and exposure to high temperatures,
  • avoid facial massage and strong pressure on the treated area,
  • use sunscreen.

What risks are associated with facial mesotherapy?

The most common adverse effects are redness, swelling and bruising at the injection sites, which usually resolve within a few days. Less commonly, local infection or an allergic reaction to cocktail ingredients may occur. People prone to pigmentation may develop post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. How many mesotherapy sessions are needed?

A series of 4–6 treatments at intervals of 2–4 weeks is commonly recommended, followed by maintenance sessions every few months. The doctor determines the number and frequency of sessions individually according to the condition of the skin and the patient’s expectations.

How does mesotherapy differ from Mesobotox (Baby Botox)?

Mesotherapy involves the administration of a nourishing cocktail containing HA, vitamins and amino acids, with hydration and skin revitalisation as its main goals. Mesobotox is an intradermal technique using diluted botulinum toxin. It may affect skin texture and fine lines while having less impact on muscle movement than conventional botulinum toxin treatment. The procedures have different indications and may complement each other. The doctor discusses the appropriate choice during consultation. More about Mesobotox: Mesobotox in Gdańsk →

When are the effects of mesotherapy visible?

Initial improvement in skin hydration and radiance may become visible a few days after the procedure. A fuller result develops gradually after several sessions. The duration of the effect varies individually.
