Shrinking Enlarged Pores with CO2 Laser

Enlarged pores visible on the nose, forehead and chin are a common skin concern caused by excess sebum production, skin ageing or acne-related changes. Fractional CO2 laser treatment may be considered as a way to improve the appearance of the skin by stimulating collagen production and epidermal remodelling. Eligibility is assessed individually during a consultation.

Why do skin pores become enlarged?

Visible skin pores are one of the most common aesthetic concerns, particularly in the T-zone: the forehead, nose and chin. Their appearance depends on several factors, including the amount of sebum produced, the elasticity of the skin around the openings of the sebaceous glands, age, skin phototype and a history of acne.

Pores do not “open” or “close” like valves. Their visibility results from enlargement of the hair-follicle openings. As the skin loses collagen and elasticity with age, pores may appear larger. A fractional CO2 laser stimulates the production of new collagen, which may improve skin firmness and reduce the visibility of pores.

Realistic expectations: a CO2 laser may reduce the visibility of enlarged pores and improve the overall texture of the skin. Results vary and depend on skin phototype, the severity of the problem and the number of sessions. Pores do not disappear completely; the aim is to improve the appearance of the skin, not to eliminate natural anatomical structures.

How does a CO2 laser work on enlarged pores?

A fractional CO2 laser creates microscopic thermal columns in the skin, producing controlled damage in small areas of the epidermis and dermis while leaving intact skin between them. This triggers the natural healing process: the skin regenerates, while fibroblasts produce new collagen and elastin.

The result is a gradual improvement in skin structure, reduced visibility of pores and a more even texture. The outcome depends on the selected laser parameters, skin phototype and the body’s response. The doctor discusses the possible degree of improvement before the procedure.

Who may be suitable for the procedure?

A consultation may be appropriate when the patient notices:

  • clearly visible pores on the nose, forehead or chin (the T-zone),
  • uneven or rough skin texture,
  • discolouration and post-acne changes accompanied by enlarged pores,
  • an overall deterioration in skin condition with loss of firmness.

During the consultation, the doctor assesses the skin phototype and the nature of the concern and rules out contraindications. The treatment parameters are selected for the individual patient’s skin.

The procedure

Before the procedure, an anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin. The doctor performs the laser treatment while precisely controlling the depth and density of the laser action. After the procedure, the skin is red and feels hot; this is a normal reaction. The patient leaves the clinic with written aftercare instructions.

Contraindications

The doctor assesses every patient individually. Typical contraindications include:

  • active skin infections in the treatment area, such as herpes or inflammation,
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  • blood-clotting disorders or anticoagulant treatment,
  • a tendency to develop keloid scars,
  • use of oral retinoids within the previous 6–12 months,
  • a dark skin phototype, which requires particularly careful parameter selection because of the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Recovery

The healing process varies between patients. During the first few days, redness, swelling and a feeling of skin tightness are common. The skin may peel for several days or up to around two weeks. During this period, it is essential to:

  • follow the doctor’s skin-care instructions,
  • protect the skin from the sun by using SPF 50+ throughout the healing period and whenever exposed to sunlight,
  • avoid strenuous physical activity and saunas during the first few days,
  • contact the clinic if concerning symptoms occur, such as worsening pain, discharge or fever.

Frequently asked questions

Does a CO2 laser really reduce the visibility of pores?

A fractional CO2 laser may improve the appearance of enlarged pores by stimulating collagen production and skin remodelling. Results vary and depend on skin phototype, the severity of the concern and the selected parameters. Pores are natural anatomical structures, so the aim of the procedure is to improve the appearance of the skin rather than remove them completely. The doctor discusses realistic expectations during the consultation.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions depends on the severity of the concern and the parameters used. With gentler fractional treatments, 2–4 sessions may be required. With more intensive parameters, an effect may be visible after one session. The doctor establishes the treatment plan after assessing the skin.

Is the procedure painful?

An anaesthetic cream is applied before the procedure. During treatment, patients may feel warmth and mild burning. Afterwards, the skin feels hot and is red; these symptoms gradually subside over the following days.

When are the results visible?

The first effects become visible after the redness and peeling subside, usually after 1–2 weeks. Full collagen remodelling and the resulting improvement in skin texture develop gradually over several weeks to several months after the procedure.

How long is the recovery period?

This depends on the treatment parameters and the individual skin response. Redness and peeling may persist for several days or up to approximately two weeks. During this time, the skin must be protected from the sun and the doctor’s recommendations must be followed.

How much does CO2 laser pore-reduction treatment cost in Gdańsk?

The price starts from PLN 500. The final amount is determined during the consultation and depends on the treatment area and selected parameters. The current aesthetic medicine price list is available on the clinic’s website or by calling 600 006 913.
