One of the most effective methods of treating a chronic anal fissure is an injection of botulinum toxin, which relaxes the anal sphincter and allows the fissure to heal. This is a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment performed on an outpatient basis at our clinic in Gdańsk.

The main problem is excessive tension in the anal sphincter muscle. This reduces the blood supply to the tissues and makes healing more difficult, creating a vicious cycle: pain → spasm → impaired healing → pain.
Botulinum toxin temporarily relaxes the anal sphincter muscle, improving the blood supply and creating suitable conditions for the fissure to heal. Its effect usually lasts approximately 2–3 months, which is generally sufficient for healing to take place.
The procedure is particularly recommended when conservative treatment has been unsuccessful, the fissure has become chronic or the patient experiences severe pain. In many cases, it can help avoid surgery.
Treatment is preceded by a proctology consultation and, when necessary, anoscopy. Similar symptoms may also be caused by haemorrhoids, so it is important to determine the exact cause.
Usually not. The procedure is brief and is often performed under local anaesthesia. The patient may experience only mild discomfort and can return home on the same day.
Initial relief usually appears after several days, with the maximum effect developing after 1–2 weeks. Healing of the fissure takes several weeks. The rate of recovery depends on the individual course of the condition.
The effect usually lasts approximately 2–3 months. This is generally enough time for the sphincter to relax, the blood supply to improve and the fissure to heal, breaking the cycle of pain and muscle spasm.
Botulinum toxin treatment allows a chronic anal fissure to heal in most patients. It is particularly effective when conservative treatment has failed and the fissure has become chronic.
Yes. In many cases, botulinum toxin treatment can help avoid surgery. It is particularly valuable in the treatment of chronic anal fissures before surgical treatment is considered.
