What is a CO2 laser and how does it work?
A CO2 laser emits a concentrated beam of radiation that is absorbed by the water contained in skin cells. Depending on the mode used, ablative or fractional, the laser can remove the outer layer of the skin or act through microscopic columns while leaving intact areas between them. This stimulates natural regenerative processes, including collagen production and tissue remodelling.
The treatment parameters, including power, operating mode and depth of action, are selected individually by the doctor each time, depending on the type of concern, skin phototype and intended goal.
What is the CO2 laser used for at our clinic?

Who may be suitable for CO2 laser treatment?
A consultation for CO2 laser treatment may be considered by people who:
- notice progressive changes in skin texture or colour, such as wrinkles, pigmentation or uneven texture,
- have acne scars that affect their appearance and self-confidence,
- are looking for an outpatient aesthetic procedure with parameters that can be tailored to a specific goal.
Eligibility is always assessed individually. The doctor evaluates the skin, the type of concern and selects the appropriate treatment mode.
Contraindications to CO2 laser treatment
The procedure may not be recommended in cases including:
- active skin infections in the treatment area,
- a tendency to develop keloid scars,
- certain autoimmune diseases or the use of immunosuppressive medicines,
- pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- use of photosensitising medicines,
- recent sun exposure or tanning in the treatment area.
Every case requires medical assessment. Based on the medical history and examination, the doctor will determine whether and when the procedure can be performed.
What is recovery like?
The healing process varies and depends on the type of treatment and the parameters used. After an ablative procedure, the skin may be red, swollen and peel for several days. Symptoms are usually milder after a fractional treatment. The doctor provides individual aftercare instructions, which generally include:
- using SPF 50+ sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure throughout the recovery period and for a prolonged period afterwards,
- moisturising the skin with products recommended by the doctor,
- avoiding swimming pools, saunas and intensive exercise until swelling has subsided.

What is the difference between ablative and fractional CO2 laser treatment?
An ablative CO2 laser removes the outer layer of the skin across the entire treated surface and is used for deeper changes. A fractional laser acts through microscopic columns while leaving intact areas between them, which shortens healing time. The mode is selected according to the indication and determined by the doctor during the consultation.

How long does healing take after a CO2 laser procedure?
Healing time varies and depends on the type of procedure and the parameters used. After fractional treatment, the skin usually returns to an everyday appearance within several days. After an ablative procedure, complete regeneration may take several weeks. The doctor discusses the expected recovery process during the consultation.
Can I go out in the sun after CO2 laser treatment?
No. The skin is particularly sensitive to ultraviolet radiation after CO2 laser treatment. Sun exposure before healing is complete may cause pigmentation and worsen the result. SPF 50+ sunscreen must be used throughout recovery and for many weeks after the procedure.
