What does hyaluronic acid treatment involve?
Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide naturally present in the skin, joints and connective tissues. It binds water and helps maintain skin hydration and elasticity. In aesthetic medicine, it is used in the form of gels of varying density, injected by a doctor with a fine needle or cannula directly into a selected facial area.
Depending on the indications, the doctor selects an appropriate product: denser gels for restoring volume in areas such as the cheeks or chin, and lighter gels for smoothing fine wrinkles and hydrating the skin. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, usually with the use of a topical anaesthetic cream or local anaesthesia.
Hyaluronic acid injections are a medical procedure associated with a defined risk profile. The most serious, although rare, complication is blockage of a blood vessel by the product, known as vascular occlusion, which may lead to tissue necrosis in the treatment area. For this reason, the procedure must be performed by an appropriately trained doctor who has hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid, available and is prepared to intervene immediately. More common and milder adverse effects include bruising, swelling and redness at the injection site, which usually resolve within a few days, as well as asymmetry, lumps or the Tyndall effect when the product is injected too superficially. Who may be suitable for the procedure?
Hyaluronic acid fillers may be considered by people who:
- want to improve the contours or volume of selected facial areas, such as the cheeks, lips, jawline or chin,
- want to reduce visible wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds and marionette lines,
- are looking for a complement or alternative to botulinum toxin treatments,

How is the procedure performed?
The doctor takes a medical history, assesses the skin and facial contours, discusses expectations, selects the product and amount, and explains the risks. During the consultation, it may be decided to perform the procedure on the same day.
A topical anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin. The doctor disinfects the treatment area and marks the planned injection points.
The doctor injects the product into the planned areas using a needle or cannula. After injection, the tissue is gently shaped. The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the area.
The doctor assesses the result immediately after the procedure and provides aftercare instructions. The timing of any follow-up appointment is also discussed.
Results and duration
Initial contouring results may be visible immediately after the procedure, but the final result is assessed after swelling and bruising have subsided, usually after several days to two weeks. Contraindications
- active infection or skin inflammation in the planned treatment area,
- confirmed allergy to hyaluronic acid or components of the product, including lidocaine,
- blood clotting disorders or the use of potent anticoagulants,
- pregnancy and breastfeeding,
- active autoimmune disease — assessed individually by the doctor,
- recent facial treatment, such as surgery, laser treatment or deep peeling, without the required interval.

Recovery
Swelling, redness and bruising may occur at the injection sites after the procedure and usually resolve within a few days. Most patients can return to their usual daily activities on the same day or the following day. Post-treatment recommendations include:
- avoid intensive physical activity for 24–48 hours,
- avoid saunas, hot baths and exposure to high temperatures for several days,
- avoid massage and strong pressure on the treatment area,
- use sunscreen,
- contact the clinic if pain or swelling worsens after several days or if paleness, discolouration or other concerning symptoms appear in the treatment area.
