Treatment of Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating of the armpits, hands or feet can significantly interfere with everyday life. Botulinum toxin blocks the transmission of nerve signals to the sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat produced. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and the effects may last from several months to a year, depending on the individual patient.

What does botulinum toxin treatment for excessive sweating involve?

Botulinum toxin is injected precisely into the skin of the area affected by excessive sweating, most commonly the armpits, hands or feet. The substance blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the eccrine sweat glands, reducing their activity. The procedure does not remove the glands. It only limits their excessive activity in the injected area.

The effects usually begin to appear within several days after the procedure. Their duration varies between patients. In the case of excessive underarm sweating, the effects are generally estimated to last from several months to one year, although they may be shorter or longer depending on the patient. The doctor discusses realistic expectations during the consultation.

Important: botulinum toxin treatment for excessive sweating does not treat the underlying cause. It reduces symptoms in the injected area for as long as the product remains active. Before the procedure, the doctor discusses the indications, medical history and possible contraindications. The decision regarding eligibility is made by the doctor.

Excessive sweating — when should treatment be considered?

Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, may be primary, with no identifiable cause, or secondary, as a symptom of another condition. A consultation with an aesthetic medicine practitioner or dermatologist may be recommended when:

  • excessive sweating of the armpits, hands or feet interferes with everyday professional or social activities,
  • antiperspirants do not provide sufficient relief,
  • the problem affects comfort and self-confidence,
  • secondary causes requiring internal medicine treatment have been excluded, such as thyroid disease, diabetes or medication-related causes.

Treatment areas

  • Armpits — the most common indication; injections are distributed evenly throughout the hair-bearing skin of the armpit
  • Hands — excessive hand sweating may require anaesthesia; the procedure covers the palmar surface of the hands
  • Feet — the plantar surface of the feet; the technique is similar to that used for the hands

The scope and treatment area are determined individually by the doctor during the consultation.

Contraindications to the procedure

The procedure may not be recommended in cases including:

  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  • neuromuscular diseases, such as myasthenia gravis,
  • the use of certain medicines, including aminoglycosides and muscle relaxants — the doctor asks about medication during the medical history,
  • active infections in the planned treatment area,
  • hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or any components of the product.

The complete list of contraindications is discussed individually by the doctor during the consultation.
