Surgical Consultation
Surgical consultation is an appointment during which a surgeon assesses a medical problem, performs an examination and discusses possible treatment options. Depending on the indications, the doctor may qualify the patient for a procedure, order additional diagnostics or recommend conservative treatment — without pressure and without a predetermined plan.

What is a surgical consultation?
A surgical consultation is an appointment aimed at assessing a health problem that may require surgical diagnostics or treatment. During the visit, the doctor takes a medical history, performs a physical examination and discusses possible next steps.
At Wyspa Medycyny Przyjaznej, a surgical consultation may concern, among other things, skin lesions, epidermal cysts, lipomas, subcutaneous lumps, wounds, scars and qualification for outpatient procedures performed under local anaesthesia.
A consultation does not automatically mean qualification for a procedure. Depending on the type of problem and the medical examination, the surgeon may qualify the patient for treatment, refer them for additional diagnostics or recommend conservative management.
When is it worth booking a surgical consultation?
- a skin lesion is growing or changing colour or appearance,
- an epidermal cyst, lipoma or subcutaneous lump appears,
- the lesion is painful, bleeding or oozing,
- qualification for a surgical procedure is needed,
- there are chronic wounds or troublesome scars,
- the patient wants the lesion assessed for health or aesthetic reasons,
- a surgical assessment is required before another treatment.
What happens during a surgical consultation?
The doctor asks about symptoms, how long the problem has been present, chronic diseases, medications being taken, including anticoagulants, and previous treatment and procedures.
The surgeon assesses the lesion or problem requiring consultation — its size, location, nature and any concerning features. If indicated, dermoscopy may be performed on site.
Before qualifying the patient for a procedure, the doctor may order additional tests: dermoscopy, ultrasound, laboratory tests or histopathological examination of a previously removed lesion.
The patient receives information about possible treatment options — surgical or conservative — together with an explanation of the risks and limitations of each option.
If there are indications and no contraindications, the surgeon plans the procedure — its date, the extent of anaesthesia, preparation and subsequent postoperative care. Outpatient procedures are often performed on the same day or shortly afterwards.
Which procedures can be planned during the consultation?
During the consultation, the patient may be qualified for procedures performed at the clinic, including:
- surgical removal of skin lesions — epidermal cysts, lipomas, fibromas and moles,
- labiaplasty — surgical correction of the labia,
- upper eyelid surgery — blepharoplasty under local anaesthesia,
- dermoscopy — assessment of pigmented lesions,
- histopathological examination of the removed lesion.
What is worth knowing before the appointment?
- Tell the doctor about all medications you take — especially anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs (aspirin, ibuprofen, acenocoumarol, NOACs) and supplements that may affect blood clotting.
- If you have previous test results concerning the lesion, such as ultrasound or histopathology, bring them to the appointment.
- During the consultation, the surgeon may recommend observation instead of a procedure — especially for low-risk lesions without concerning symptoms.
- For pigmented lesions, such as moles or naevi, the doctor may first recommend dermoscopy before deciding whether to remove the lesion.
- If you take medication that affects blood clotting, it may need to be discontinued or discussed with your treating physician before the procedure.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral for a surgical consultation?
No. A referral is not required for a private appointment. You can book directly by phone, via WhatsApp or through ZnanyLekarz.
Can the procedure be performed on the day of the consultation?
For simple skin lesions, such as an epidermal cyst, a small lipoma or an epidermal lesion, an outpatient procedure may be performed on the same day or at the next available appointment, provided the doctor qualifies the patient and there are no contraindications. More complex cases require prior diagnostics and a separate procedure date. It is worth asking about this option when registering.
Which test results should I bring to the consultation?
If you have previous results concerning the lesion — ultrasound, histopathology after an earlier procedure or dermoscopy results — bring them with you. The doctor may also request blood test results if you are planning a procedure and take medication that affects blood clotting.
Will the surgeon always recommend a procedure?
No. The surgeon assesses each case individually. For low-risk lesions without concerning symptoms, observation may be recommended. For pigmented lesions, dermoscopy is often the first step, followed by a decision on possible removal.
Will histopathology be performed after the lesion is removed?
For surgically removed lesions, the doctor may send the material for histopathological examination. The decision on whether the test is necessary is made by the doctor and depends on the nature of the lesion. This is discussed with the patient before the procedure.
