The procedure is considered when a frenulum that is too short or too tight causes pain and discomfort during erection, limits foreskin mobility or leads to recurrent tearing and bleeding during sexual intercourse. This is a common problem that is usually easy to correct.
The doctor incises and appropriately repairs the frenulum — frenulotomy or frenuloplasty — which lengthens it and relieves tension. The procedure is short and performed under local anaesthesia. Healing usually takes 1–3 weeks; during this time, sexual intercourse should be avoided until the time indicated by the doctor.
Problems with the foreskin and frenulum may be connected. If you also have narrowing of the foreskin, see phimosis treatment and circumcision. The scope of the procedure is selected by the doctor during a urology consultation.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you should not feel pain. After the anaesthesia wears off, mild discomfort may occur, which can be relieved with painkillers and usually resolves within a few days.
Healing usually takes 1 to 3 weeks. During this time, proper hygiene of the area and abstaining from sexual intercourse until the time indicated by the doctor are recommended, so the wound can heal properly.
When performed correctly, frenuloplasty usually improves comfort during sexual intercourse because it eliminates pain and tension. After healing, most patients experience significant relief and more comfortable erections.
The aim of the procedure is to permanently relieve tension, so after proper healing, the risk of recurrent tearing is much lower. Following post-procedure recommendations during the healing period is essential.
