What does a urology consultation involve?
The visit is intended to gather a full picture of symptoms and establish a management plan. It includes:
- Medical history - the urologist asks about symptoms, their severity and duration, medical history, medications, lifestyle and risk factors.
- Physical examination - depending on the symptoms, it may include assessment of the genital organs, prostate examination (per rectum) and abdominal examination.
- Imaging tests (ultrasound) - if needed, ultrasound of the urinary tract, prostate, scrotum or penis is performed during the visit. The examination helps assess organs more precisely.
- Laboratory tests - the doctor may order urine tests, PSA, semen analysis or other tests depending on indications.
- Discussion of results and treatment plan - the doctor presents diagnostic conclusions, explains possible causes of symptoms and discusses available treatment options.
